The company Backwelt Pilz has been located in the Waldviertel region of Lower Austria for generations and produces the highest quality frozen baked goods.

In 2002, Backwelt Pilz was founded as an independent company, evolving from the Gmünder traditional bakery Pilz, which has existed since 1904. Backwelt Pilz invested continuously in expanding its product portfolio with a variety of innovative products, as well as in the enhancement of production technology.

Under the motto "Quality is a matter of honor," Backwelt Pilz is capable of producing products of consistently high quality through well-thought-out production processes. Since 2004, the company has been certified according to the guidelines of Austria Bio Garantie and the International Food Standards.

The problem: Contaminants in grains and seeds can end up in the final product.

The Backwelt Pilz produces pre-baked and pre-cooked frozen baked goods for the retail food trade, gas station shops, and system catering. During the production of the diverse pastries, it is possible that physical contaminants, such as metal particles, glass splinters, and small stones, may be present among the grain and seed ingredients.

The solution: State-of-the-Art foreign body detection against the smallest metallic and non-metallic impurities

To ensure that bread and pastries are absolutely free of foreign bodies, Backwelt Pilz has decided to install RAYCON D+ X-ray inspection devices for packaged products in addition to the existing metal detectors. The metal detectors detect, for example, iron, stainless steel, and non-ferrous particles. The RAYCON D+ X-ray device detects not only smaller and harder-to-detect metallic contaminants but also stones and other materials.

A special feature of the project was that a custom solution was developed together with the customer, making it possible to inspect unpackaged bread with RAYCON D+. In this case, the customer must regularly remove bread crumbs from the device. This step is integrated into the sophisticated hygiene concept.

The foreign body detectors are integrated at the end of the production process before the baked goods are packed into boxes. Contaminated products are ejected into an IFS-compliant lockable collection container. Everything runs automatically, continuously, and without interruption.

With the combination solution of metal detection plus X-ray technology, a variety of foreign bodies are detected and removed. In this way, the safety of the production processes and the purity of the products are ensured to the maximum extent.

The customer benefit: Competitive advantages due to the highest quality of the end products.

The detection of foreign bodies is running very well! Since commissioning, we have saved ourselves many foreign body complaints, as even the smallest contaminants such as stones are sorted out. A suitable solution was developed together with the company Sesotec, with which we are very satisfied. This is our advantage: More safety for us as a company and for our customers," says Johannes Pilz, Managing Director of Backwelt Pilz and adds:

"If we build further production facilities, we will definitely use the combination solution from Sesotec."
