Why is metal recycled?

In Germany, 25.6 million metric tons of scrap is melted down in blast furnaces each year. The recycled material accounts for more than half of the nation’s steel production. However, steel is certainly not the only metal that is recycled. Scrap iron, lead, zinc, aluminum and copper are also used to produce new metalware. Metals can be melted down any number of times and turned into something new. While quality levels go down for many other materials during the recycling process, scrap metal consistently yields high-quality products, which makes metal the ideal material for recycling. Due to global shortages of raw materials, the importance of recycling is growing rapidly. By recycling metals, it is possible to conserve resources, save up to 95 percent of the energy required to manufacture them and significantly reduce production costs.

How do Sesotec systems help you?

In order to use scrap metal to produce new materials, the different types of metal first have to be sorted and separated into homogeneous metal fractions. Sesotec sorting systems remove metals from shredder fractions or separate different types of metal from one another.

To differentiate between metals more securely, various types of sensor technology are used:
