Why is contaminant detection and removal important in the petrochemical industry?

When it comes to producing plastics – one of the most important areas in the petrochemical industry – product purity is a key quality factor. It is necessary above all to eliminate metal pieces and particles, which could otherwise cause damage to machinery when the plastic is processed and create quality issues. As a result, manufacturers of plastics should use machine-based contaminant detectors. It is the only way they can ensure their ability to consistently deliver granules of perfect quality.


What kinds of contaminants could appear?

Metals such as iron, stainless steel and copper very often contaminate plastics. There is a wide range of reasons for this, including:

  • Slough and wear from conveyor lines (pipes)
  • Slough and wear from machines
  • Broken blades during hot or cold die-face pelletising
  • Accidental contamination through openings in silos, for example due to staff losing objects

Where do plastics manufacturers use our machines?

It varies. Some manufacturers inspect the granules during production, while others do so after the granules have passed through a screening machine. Yet other manufacturers use our machines to perform a quality check during the outgoing goods phase, for example directly before filling the granules into big bags, octabins or other similar containers.
