We are Sesotec – Insights: Franz Neubauer, a Sesotec pioneer

Franz Neubauer, born in 1959, is a true Sesotec original. For over 45 years, he has shaped the company with his dedication, experience, and focus on what really matters. Whether through his professional journey or as a witness to major changes, Franz has experienced the evolution of S+S/Sesotec up close. Franz, you’ve been with Sesotec for over 45 years – do you still remember your very first day at work? What stands out in your memory from back then?

To be honest, I don’t remember all the details of my very first day at work on April 1st, 1980 – it’s simply been quite a while. But what I do remember vividly is the amazing team spirit we had back then in our small group of around 25 colleagues. We supported each other not just at work, but also in our personal lives. Everything was straightforward, close-knit, and personal – that family-like atmosphere had a lasting impact on me from the very beginning.

A lot can change in a company over so many years. From your perspective, what have been the biggest developments at Sesotec that you’ve witnessed firsthand?

With the impressive growth Sesotec has seen over the past decades, it’s not easy to single out just a few milestones – there have been so many exciting developments. When I joined the company in 1980, we were still in the early stages: we had just developed our first metal separator, which was a real breakthrough. In those first years, I worked in shipping, warehousing, and purchasing – back then, you really did everything yourself.

A special moment was when we got our first Nixdorf computer – that must have been around 1983. Josef Peter was our very first “IT guy” – a big step towards digitalization. And of course, the move in 1986 from Eberhardsreuth to Saunstein – that was a major milestone for all of us.

This is what the first Nixdorf computer looked like – the one Franz Neubauer worked with.

A technical highlight came in 1994 with the development of a sorting system that could separate glass by color – a true innovation at the time. It’s been wonderful to see how the company has continuously evolved – and I’m proud to have been part of that journey.

Apart from the technological developments – which moments in the company’s history have stayed with you the most?

What I remember most vividly is the major shift that happened in the early 1990s. Back then, some colleagues left to start their own companies, like Mesutronic, Sys, or SLE. It was a challenging time for S+S. That’s why I found it all the more impressive how Mr. Frisch and Mr. Eibl stepped up, took responsibility, and guided the company back into calmer waters with great dedication.

Looking back, that period really showed how much unity, courage, and willingness to embrace change there is in our company.

Were there ever moments when you considered changing your career path or leaving the company?

Of course, over so many years, there were moments when I thought about making a change – simply out of a desire to experience something new. But back in the 1980s and 1990s, that wasn’t so easy. In our region, there were only a few larger companies – apart from S+S, really only Sedlbauer.

What made you stay with Sesotec all these years – and what does the company mean to you on a personal level?

Over the years, I’ve had different supervisors – and of course, not everything always went smoothly. But I found my path, contributed in my own way, and stood my ground. Looking back, I’m very glad I stayed. It allowed me to witness so many exciting developments and actively contribute to Sesotec’s growth and success story. What defines the company for me is exactly that spirit: staying committed, helping to shape things, and building something meaningful together.

Thank you, Franz – especially for your open and honest answers, and for sharing such a fascinating glimpse into over four decades of Sesotec history!
