We are Sesotec - David Mühlbauer: A living example of inclusion at Sesotec
David Mühlbauer is a valued member of the Sesotec team and works in
financial accounting. His journey has not always been easy - he is paraplegic
after an accident, but thanks to his perseverance and the strong support of his
team, he masters his day-to-day work with confidence. In this interview, he talks
about his career, the importance of team spirit and how Sesotec lives true
inclusion.
David, you are an integral part of the Sesotec
team and work in financial accounting. How did you get here?
My journey at Sesotec began in September 2020 with my apprenticeship as
an industrial clerk. Everything went well - until the accident that completely
changed my life happened in May 2021. After an intensive rehabilitation phase,
I was able to return to work step by step in December 2021. The reintegration
was of course a challenge, but I received a lot of backing and support from the
entire team right from the start. That helped me incredibly to keep going. I
successfully completed my training in June 2024 and have been delighted to be a
permanent part of Financial Accounting ever since.
How has Sesotec accompanied you on this
challenging path?
I
was given the assurance right from the start that I would be able to work at
Sesotec again after my rehabilitation - that was incredibly important to me.
This security helped me to concentrate fully on my recovery without having to
worry about my professional future.
What particularly
touched me was the enormous solidarity within the company. When I was
paraplegic after the accident in May 2021, Sesotec supported me and my family
with a donation of 20,000 euros. The money came from a donation pot that the
management had already set up for a good cause at Christmas 2020. Knowing that
I had such a strong team behind me gave me an incredible amount of strength
during this time.
"Following a serious accident, David has faced major personal and
professional challenges. We are all the more impressed by his commitment: with
ambition, motivation and professional expertise, he continues to give his all.
He shows us every day what it means to go above and beyond. It is a matter of
course for us to create conditions in which all employees - regardless of
physical limitations - can develop their potential to the best of their
ability. For us, this is inclusion in practice and an important part of our
corporate culture.
I am grateful to have such a committed and inspiring person in the team
- and proud to be able to accompany him on his journey.”

What does a typical working day look like for
you in Financial Accounting?
I
don't really have a fixed routine - every day brings variety. I usually start
the morning by processing emails and getting an overview of the tasks I have to
do. Then it's usually a case of posting invoices or dealing with other issues
that have priority at the time. What is particularly
important to me is my team. My colleagues are very understanding of my
situation and I really appreciate the fact that I can work flexibly from home
when I need to. This openness and support make a big difference to my
day-to-day work.
How has Sesotec adapted the working environment
to your needs?
Sesotec has really done a lot to make my return to work as comfortable
as possible. For example, a stair lift was installed so that I can easily reach
the upper floor.
The
entrance area was also redesigned so that I can get into the building without
barriers. A wheelchair toilet has also been installed, which is of course
extremely important for my everyday life here. I think it's anything
but a matter of course that an employer is so consistently responsive to
individual needs.
Sesotec is strongly committed to practicing
inclusion. How do you experience this in the company and what do you
particularly like about Sesotec?
At
Sesotec, inclusion isn't just a buzzword, it really is a way of life. I can
contact the representative body for severely disabled employees at any time if
I have a concern - and they always work together to find solutions. What I particularly
appreciate: I am not ostracized or treated “differently” in any way. Instead,
everyone involved looks at how I can participate in everyday working life as
well as possible - whether on site or working from home. This cooperation at eye
level and the openness in the team make Sesotec a very special employer for me.
What would you like to pass on to other people
who find themselves in a similar situation?
I
would like to encourage everyone who finds themselves in a similar situation:
Don't let it get you down - even if the road is sometimes tough. It is
incredibly important to always look for solutions and address challenges
openly. This is the only way to make a difference together with others. And above all: make
the best of your situation. Even if not everything goes as planned, there are
always ways to move on and find new perspectives. It's worth sticking with it.
Thank you, David, for your frank words and for
giving us an insight into your day-to-day work!
You're very welcome! Thank you for letting me share my story.
