Automatically sorting seed and grain

Assuring the quality of seed and grain in the production process is extremely challenging. Our sorting systems reliably remove contaminants such as stones − and sort various types of grain and seed entirely automatically.

For decades, Sesotec has specialised in automatic sorting systems. Our systems designed to automatically detect contaminants and sort seed and grain ensure consistently high quality and maximum customer satisfaction. Sesotec sorting systems even handle challenging tasks, such as removing ergot, with the highest degree of reliability and minimal loss of material. The smart optical systems are far superior in this regard to other solutions, such as specific gravity separators. From sorting different types of grain, such as barley and wheat, to removing impurities and contaminants, Sesotec has the right solution for you.

Why is sorting important with regard to seed and grain?

Seed companies aim to produce high-quality seed. Modern processing technologies and utmost diligence ensure that the products are manufactured with the highest level of quality.

Within the scope of quality assurance, it is necessary to remove contaminants and eliminate extraneous materials. The first step usually entails the use of separating tables for mechanical sorting to remove larger contaminants, such as stones. Optical sorting systems are then deployed to handle more complex sorting tasks, such as removing contaminants and extraneous grains.

Removing ergot, for example, involves a highly demanding cleaning process. Specific gravity separators can be used to tackle this problem, but the results are often inadequate. Optical sorting systems perform the task with an optimum outcome.

What purpose do Sesotec product inspection and sorting systems serve?

The inspection and sorting of seed and grain mainly target impurities, contaminants and quality issues. From contaminant detection to optical sorting, our systems function according to a very large number of criteria and thereby ensure safe inspection and sorting.

Benefits of Sesotec contaminant detectors and sorting systems:

  • Precise detection and removal of contaminants
  • Precise removal of impurities
  • Constant performance (in contrast to sorting by hand)
  • User-friendly operation (plug-and-play principle)
  • Reliable functionality
  • Designed for high capacity levels
  • Low operating costs (energy consumption, wear parts)
  • Rapid amortisation
  • Optimisation of downstream processes (machine protection)

What kinds of contamination and quality issues could occur?

Potential contamination and quality issues with regard to seed and grain can occur during harvest or processing (e.g. transport in storage). However, carelessness by operating staff can also result in contamination.

Examples of contaminants include the following:

  • Stones
  • Grains of other cereals
  • Husks/hulls
  • Metal
  • Glass

Examples of quality issues include the following:

  • Fungal toxins (ergot, aflatoxins, mycotoxins)
  • Breakage
  • Anomalous shapes
  • Discolouration
  • Deformities

What kinds of seed and grain are inspected and sorted?

Our contaminant detection and sorting systems are used for a wide range of products. Several examples include the following:

  • Wheat
  • Corn
  • Soya
  • Rye
  • Sesame
  • Sunflower seeds
  • Pumpkin seeds
  • Seed
  • Edible seeds
  • Beans
  • Legumes

What kinds of detection and sorting technology are used?

Sesotec possesses sound expertise across a wide range of technology. Thanks to the carefully considered combination of sensors and software, we achieve outstanding results when it comes to sorting and product inspection. The systems function with the following sensors, among others:

  • Inductive metal detectors
  • X-ray technology (e.g. analysis of thickness, chemical composition, etc.)
  • Monochrome camera technology (colour analysis function using grey tones)
  • True-colour camera (colour analysis similar to the human eye)
  • Shape recognition (analysis of geometrical shapes)
  • Multispectral technology (material recognition of glass and stones, for example)
